When it comes to fishing techniques our group of anglers is quite diverse. My fishing pal Duncan McHenry may be the most out-of-place, dawning a fly rod regardless of the situation. On this night, McHenry stole the show with this solid 1 1/2 pound smallmouth bass catch from the shore. This trip to Clinton Reservoir near Lawrence, Kan. didn’t yield the best numbers of the year, but the catch included five different species of fish including Smallmouth Bass, Crappie, White Bass, Channel Catfish and Bluegill.

- Duncan McHenry letting the fish run. The distinctive sound of a fish taking line from a fly reel indicated the size of the smallmouth bass on the line.
- With the pictures taken, it’s time for this smallmouth to get back to the water.
- McHenry takes the much needed photo for bragging rights.
- Smallmouth Bass can be distinguished from similar species by their spotted appearance and, well, their small mouth.
- Younger smallmouths feed on insect larvae. Larger fish feed on minnows, crayfish and small sun fish.

- A Clinton Lake sunset marks one of the best times of the day for fishing.
- Periods of full and new moons often lead to high levels of activity among fish species.
